International Railway Journal - August 2007 - (Page 32) China CNR class SS7E electric locomotives operate passenger services radiating from Beijing. Hu also says that, with this new ‘speed-boost’, “(MOR) will increase the number of freight trains by 1316, bringing the total number up to 16,656.” Since the previous national speed-up in 2004, the total length of track upgraded for speeds of up to 160km/h has reached more than 7700km. Under the provisions of the 2007 speed-up, trains can now operate at up 160km/h on the Beijing - Harbin, Beijing - Shanghai and Beijing - Guangzhou routes. For the first time, China has put 19 non-stop express trains, serving routes such as Beijing to Shanghai, Beijing to Changsha and Beijing to Nanjing, into service. Most large cities in China have gained access to express train services thanks to MOR’s speedboost projects. This is set to improve further in the future, and MOR says 13,000km of existing lines will be passed for 200km/h operation within five years. IRJ A decade of increasing speed across China April 1997 - First large-scale acceleration of services, with 140km/h operation introduced on lines from Beijing to Guangzhou, Shanghai and Harbin. October 1998 - Speeds raised to 160km/h on principal routes. Swedish X2000 tilting train operates at 200km/h on Guangzhou Shenzhen line. October 2000 - Speeds raised on four key north-south corridors (Beijing to Guangzhou, Shanghai, Harbin and Kowloon) and east-west routes from Lanzhou to Lianyungang and Urumqi. October 2001 - Significant acceleration of services on the Wuhan - Chengdu, Beijing - Kowloon, Zhejiang - Jiangxi, Shanghai Hangzhou, Harbin - Dalian lines, as well as the southern section of the Beijing - Guangzhou line. April 2004 - Six-fold increase in 160km/h operation. More than 16,500km of track cleared for operation at speeds of 120km/h or more. April 2007 - Passenger train speeds increased across one-third of the network, with more than 6000km passed for 200km/h operation. Maximum weight of freight trains increased to 5000 tonnes. 32 IRJ August 2007
