Wilhelmsen ASA (WW) have reached an agreement with Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) to build four vessels that will be the world’s largest Roll-on Roll-off (RO/RO) carriers. The vessels will be built at MHI’s Nagasaki yard for delivery in 2011 and 2012. The new RO/RO carriers will have a cargo volume of 138,000 m3—close to 10% more than WW/OW partnership’s most recent RO/RO carriers. The new generation RO/RO ships will be employed in WW and OW’s joint venture Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logis- S tics. They will be designed for efficient transportation and handling of high and heavy cargo (H&H), non-containerized cargo (NCC) and cars. The vessels will be unique on the basis of major innovative design criteria such as high ramp capacity, deck strength and height, low fuel consumption, good transportation economy and safe cargo handling. Environmental considerations have included paying particular attention to hull lines development in order to reduce fuel oil consumption and exhaust gas emissions. The exhaust gas energy will also be recovered to generate the entire electrical need at sea. WW and OW have an Western Gulf lease sale draws high bids of $287 million The U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) has recently accepted high bids valued at $287,081,023 and awarded 274 leases to the successful high bidders who participated in Western Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale 204. The leases were awarded following the completion of an extensive, two-phase bid evaluation process. A total of 282 tracts in the Western Gulf of Mexico received bids at Lease Sale 204 held in Aug. 2007. Forty-seven companies submitted 358 bids with a total for high bids on all 282 tracts of $289,953,066. The highest bid accepted on a tract was $37,588,800 made by Statoil Gulf of Mexico LLC for Alaminos Canyon Block 810. This tract is in deep water (>2,000m) and received two bids. BP Exploration & Production Inc. was the company with the most high bids accepted, with 88. One of the largest Large Car Truck Carriers employed in the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics is the 71,583-gt Faust, which has an 8,000-car capacity extensive newbuilding program that currently comprises 43 vessels that will be delivered from now until 2012. SHI delivers world’s largest drillship Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries recently delivered the DrillMAX—the world’s largest drillship—to Sweden’s Stena Drilling. The DP3 Class ship is 748 ft by 137.8 ft with a depth of 62.3 ft. The DrillMAX has a displacement of 105,822 short tons and can drill in water depths of 10,000 ft. It is currently equipped for drilling in 7,500 ft of water. Classed by DNV, the DrillMAX is designed to operate in the harsh environments of the Barents and Norwegian Seas in temperatures down to -20C, with waves of up to 16 meters and wind speeds of up to 41 meters per second. 10,000 ft water depth http://www.eagle.org
