Technews California Maritime receives $500,000 clean diesel grant The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Carl Moyer program gave a $500,000 grant to the California Maritime Academy to replace outdated diesel engines aboard three of its campus workboats, the Black Bear, Little Bear and Cub. The new clean diesels will reduce concentrations of NOx, reduce gasses and particulate matter and improve fuel efficiency. According to Mike Andrews, a Cal Maritime marine vocational instructor, the school “estimate(s) that these new engines will reduce our output of nitrous oxides by more than half.” The Cub will be the first to have its unit replaced—by a 340 hp Caterpillar engine about one third the size of the original unit in early 2009. Work on Black Bear and Little Bear will be completed by 2010. www.csum.edu Cold Iron technology reduces emissions Clean Air Logix, Inc. (CAL) and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) successfully completed the first Southern California demonstration of the CAL DFMV (Dual Frequency, Multivoltage), Mobile Cold Ironing technology on the MOL Enterprise. Designed to connect to virtually any ocean-going vessel; the CAL DFMV system connects with the vessel’s generator and operates parallel with the vessel’s electrical system. Using the system leads to the reduction of NOx, SOx, CO, CO2 and DPM10 emissions.
