Marine Log - January 2009 - (Page 8) Update Largest boxship yet to GL class The 13,800-TEU MSC Daniela became the biggest containership ever classed by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) when it was delivered in mid-December at Samsung Heavy Industry (SHI) Shipyard in Geoje, Korea. The MSC Daniela is not the world’s largest containership. That title is currently held by the Emma Maersk and its sisters at a maximum TEU capacity of 14,500 and an overall length of 397m. Beyond its impressive size, the 380m MSC Daniela also has some exceptional design elements. For example, to meet SOLAS requirements for bridge visibility, the deckhouse is amidships while the engine room is aft. This arrangement allows for increased container capacity and reduced ballast water. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA NORWEGIAN DESIGNED, JAPANESE BUILT A series of four Platform Supply Vessels for Japan’s Sanko Steamship Company will be designed in Europe and built in Japan. STX Europe will supply its PSV 09 CD design (see photo) and ship equipment for the four platform supply vessels. The total value of the four contracts is about NOK 400 million (about $56.5 million). Design work will be carried out by STX Europe’s design company in Alesund, Norway. STX Europe’s newly opened office in Singapore played an important role in securing the order. The PSVs will be built by Japan’s Universal Shipbuilding Corporation for delivery between 2010 and 2012. “With these new contracts we have established a very good relationship with two of the largest and most important Japanese shipowners,” says Roy Reite, president for STX Europe’s business area Offshore & Specialized Vessels. The 4,800 dwt vessels, will have a length of 86.6 meters. The “CD” designation in the PSV 09 CD signifies “Clean Design.” 8 MARINE LOG JANUARY 2009 www.marinelog.com http://www.wooster-products.com http://www.wooster-products.com http://www.marinelog.com
