Operating at a speed of 13 knots, the 4,100 dwt Edda Fram will consume about 13 tonnes of Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) per day. Depending on the weather, the vessel consumes about five tonnes of MDO during dynamic positioning operations per day. Also of significance is the one of the three bow thrusters fitted on the Edda Fram is a Rim drive. Norway’s Brunvoll A.S developed rim driven thruster units in co-operation with the company Norpropeller AS, which is also partly owned by Brunvoll. The rim driven thruster is electrically driven with a permanent magnet (PM) motor, where the motor windings are in the stator and where the rotor has a number of permanent magnets. The rotor bearings are located at the periphery of the rotor. The fixed pitch propeller is directly connected to the rotor and hence the thruster unit has no central shaft. ML KAWASAKI CELEBRATES PRODUCTION OF 3,000TH SIDE THRUSTER Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) has come a long way since it produced its first side thruster based on Vickers’ technology at the Akashi Works in 1967. The company recently celebrated the production of its 3,000th side thruster. In 1971, Kawasaki designed and manufactured its first proprietary side thruster. In 1986, production was moved to Kobe Works, Chuo-ku, Kobe, which evolved into a comprehensive propulsion manufacturing site, producing CP main propellers and Rexpellers (azimuth propeller). In 1995, Kawasaki established a joint venture in China, Wuhan Kawasaki Marine Machinery Co., Ltd., (WKM), to serve Chinese shipbuilders. Kawasaki is currently manufacturing seven different sizes of side thrusters ranging from 1000mm to 3100mm in propeller diameter, with both controllable-pitch and fixed-pitch propeller in every fields including offshore projects. Kawasaki will be manufacturing a record 350 units in the current fiscal year.
