Marine Log - February 2008 - (Page 39) SHIPPRODUCTION IN SEARCH OF SMARTER SHIPBUILDING SHI LOOKS TO BOOST PRODUCTIVITY BY 10% Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), the world’s second largest shipyard, is aiming to be number globally in terms of technology, quality, efficiency and added value. Sales for 2007 were $7.8 billion. Intergraph’s Tom Szoka, vice president, Global Business Development, Marine, sees Intergraph’s intelligent CAD system SmartMarine 3D as a key contributor to SHI’s vision as a technology leader. Presenting at Marine Log’s Intelligent Shipbuilding Conference this past December, Szoka outlined Samsung’s implementation status of SmartMarine 3D. SHI has been increasing its use of SmartMarine since 2004, when it used it for one full ship and three partial ships. Last year, eight ships and four partial ships were designed with the system. These include four classes of LNG carriers, ranging from 155,000 to 266,000 m3, to containerships, a VLCC, drillship, FPSO and a COT. SHI is looking to reduce rework, design man hours, and material costs, as well as provide precise and variable production information to the ERP earlier on. Ultimately, says Szoka, SHI wants to improve productivity by 10% and generate cost savings of $43 million per year by 2009. n a bid to build two aircraft carriers for the U.K. Ministry of Defense, Britain’s two largest shipbuilders, VT Group and BAE Systems, are in advanced talks to form a joint venture shipbuilding operation. Once the joint venture is finalized, the shipbuilders will be awarded a $7.8 billion contract to build two 65,000-ton carriers—the largest such vessels ever built in the U.K. One snag for the Ministry of Defense (MOD) is that it is facing serious funding gaps over the next two to three years— reportedly upwards of £2 billion. Clearly, any cost savings in the aircraft carrier program would be welcome. A recently signed deal between BAE Systems and Spain’s Sener Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A. could well play a central role in generating cost savings through the reduction in the design and production manhours and rework. The deal between Sener and BAE Systems PLC involves licenses for use of the FORAN Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) System in its shipbuilding activities. According to the contract, FORAN can be implemented in any BAE Systems Group company, any member of the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA) as well as in any subcontractor of the partner companies. The ACA is a consortium formed by the U.K. Ministry of Defense in partnership with defense contractors to carry out the design and construction of the 280m long future aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. The ACA—in which MOD acts as both client and participant— includes the BAES/VT planned Joint Venture, Thales, Babcock and BAES (Surface Ships & Insyte). The HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales are due to enter service in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
