Marine Log - February 2008 - (Page 42) SHIPPRODUCTION ICE CLASS TANKERS FORAN is currently implemented at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, Barrow-in-Furness and BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions Limited, Scotstoun, Glasgow. BAE Systems will use the FORAN System as a strategic business application for support and further improvement of the ship design, construction and integration activities at its shipbuilding sites in the U.K. The companies expect to generate cost savings and improved planning and product quality by using FORAN in the design and manufacturing processes. One major benefit of using a 3D CAD/CAM system such as FORAN is that the entire ship product model is stored in a single database. This single database can then be shared remotely by different design groups to facilitate concurrent engineering. The new FORAN release V60R2.0 incorporates database replication capabilities that facilitate the collaborative engineering in the same project of two large working groups geographically separated, so reducing dramatically the needs of coordination for the same working groups working with independent databases. Under the contract with Sener, about 200 licenses have been installed at both BAE sites. These licenses are currently being used for developing the different stages of the Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) project, as well as for internal training. Sener will also provide training, customization, on-site and remote technical assistance, as well as the development of interfaces between FORAN and existing business systems. BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions in Glasgow will build the central block of each of the two 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy.
