Technews A look at KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband Service KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband service creates a “cable modem” experience at sea with always-on, fixed-price and flexible pay-per-megabyte service options, upload rates as high as 512 Kbps, downloads as fast as 2 Mbps, and big savings over other maritime satellite communications options. The mini-VSAT broadband service is intended for mobile applications and offers the benefits of high-quality, reliable broadband data connections using a smaller antenna at a lower cost than existing maritime broadband hardware. Modern spread spectrum broadcast technology permits mini-VSAT broadband to operate using the KVH TracPhone V7 antenna, which is 85% smaller by volume and 75% lighter than those employed in 1-meter VSAT equipment. The TracPhone V7 is only 24in. in diameter and weighs 60 lbs compared to the larger traditional for 1-meter VSAT. In addition, the TracPhone V7, together with its fully integrated modem, control unit, and router, is 25% less expensive (under $33,000 for the entire system). With hardware this compact, the TracPhone can be installed quickly and easily without modifying the vessel. The TracPhone V7 is also a standalone system that finds, acquires, and locks onto the satellite without requiring any integration with or input from the ship’s gyro-compass, unlike traditional VSAT antennas. The mini-VSAT broadband service employs ViaSat’s unique Code Reuse Multiple Access (CRMA) technology that sends data to the satellite immediately in short bursts at the fastest possible data rate, up to 512 Kbps from ship to shore and 2 Mbps from shore to ship. www.kvh.com The TracPhone V7 has a small antenna in its dome, an integrated GPS VSAT antennas that weigh 250-400 lbs. As a result, the TracPhone V7 reduces the cost for hardware and installation, often by more than 50%. The hardware features a small 24in./60 cm, robust antenna that, in its dome, is 85% smaller in volume and weighs 75% less than the systems used MacGregor secures $273 million crane orders By the end of 2007, MacGregor had secured crane orders worth over $273 million. The cranes are on order for 101 ships in China and Korea. The ships are comprised of 80 bulk carriers, 14 general cargo ships, and 7 container feeder ships. The Cranes for the ships being built in Korean yards will be manufactured by MacGregor’s partners Hochang Machinery Industries Co., Ltd and SPP Heavy Industries Co Ltd, and those for Chinese yards by CSSC Nanjing Luzhou Machine Company Co Ltd.
