While the North American cruise market still accounts for 75% of the global total, growth in recent years has been driven by huge increases outside of North America, notably Europe. Following 28% growth in 2006 for traffic generated outside North America, CLIA reported year-over-year growth for three quarters of 2008 at 30%. North American generated traffic was reported at -3% and -4% in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. The worldwide growth in 1st quarter traffic very nearly matched capacity growth, but had begun to decline by the 2nd quarter, a divergence which by CLIA’s own estimates is expected to continue through 2009. Figures released by the U.S. Maritime Administration describe in great detail the impacts of the shift of capacity away from the Caribbean. North American cruise traffic was down 7.6% in the third quarter 2008 and 4.9% for the full nine months year-over-year. While the phenomenal growth in Europe has thus far sheltered the cruise lines from adverse effects of the downturn, such is not the 32% level. The orderbook is split evenly between European and North Americanbased brands, with Costa, Celebrity, MSC and Royal Caribbean each having more than 10,000 new berths being built. Eleven new ships are scheduled for delivery in 2009, including a new “largest ship,” the 220,000 GT Royal Caribbean 5,400 passenger Oasis of the Seas, Carnival’s largest (Carnival Dream) at 130,000 GT, and at the other end of the spectrum, the 8,700 GT Pearl Mist, the first ship for new brand Pearl Seas Cruises. Except for small coastal cruisers being built in North America, the remainder of the orderbook continues to be built in Europe, with Italy accounting for 40% of the tonnage and Germany another 30%. Korea’s STX Group completed its acquisition of Aker Yards, changing the name to STX Europe. NCL has cancelled its second 150,000 GT ship being built in France, with the first now scheduled for delivery in 2010. MSC is also said to be renegotiating the price and delivery with STX Europe for the 5th and 6th Musica Class vessels just ordered in August and scheduled for delivery in 2011 and 2012. PASSENGERS CLIA member lines carried 13.2 million passengers in 2008 according to recently announced estimates, an www.marinelog.com FEBRUARY 2009 MARINE LOG 19 http://www.abb.com http://www.abb.com http://www.marinelog.com
