I can see the weather roll in from the west, traffic back up at the Holland Tunnel, excursion boats ferry tourists to and from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, tugs push tank barges ladened with heating oil, and ferries buzz back and forth carrying commuters from New Jersey. Now, I’ve even seen a jet float down the river. That jet was the now well-publicized Flight 1549, which made an emergency landing into the frigid waters of the Hudson River moments after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport on Jan. 15. Just minutes after the crash, my fellow office workers and I gathered at the windows in our conference room to witness an impromptu rescue by a flotilla of ferries, tugs, police boats, fire boats and Coast Guard craft coming to the aid of the stricken jet. We posted a short video of the rescue shot from our windows on www.marinelog.com at: http://www.marinelog.com/DOCS/NEW I INTERNATIONAL SALES MANAGER Donna Edwards dedwards@sbpub.com SALES MANAGER Jeff Sutley SALES REPRESENTATIVE -KOREA Young-Seoh Chinn CLASSIFIED SALES Diane Okon CONFERENCE DIRECTOR Jane Poterala CONFERENCE COORDINATOR Michelle M. The 20-year-old was at the helm of the Gov. Thomas Keane, a NY Waterway ferry. In an interview with MARINE LOG’s assistant editor Shirley Del Valle, Catanazaro says of her quick actions, “I didn’t have time to think. We train constantly and I was just doing what we are trained to do.” The efforts of Catanazaro and those of her fellow mariners played a pivotal role in helping save all 155 of those onboard the jet. It highlights the critical need to drill and train for the routine and the unexpected. It also proves once again that the best safety device onboard your ship is a well-trained crew. We will highlight training, recruitment and retention next month. The incident eerily echoed what happened on 9-11, when a wide variety of commercial and recreational vessels conducted an impromptu evacuation of hundreds of thousands of stranded commuters from Manhattan. jsnyder@sbpub.com dokon@sbpub-chicago.com jpoterala@sbpub.com mzolkos@sbpub.com lmeynard@sbpub.com A SIMMONS-BOARDMAN PUBLICATION EDITORIAL AND BUSINESS OFFICES 345 Hudson Street New York, N.Y. 10014 TEL: (212) 620-7200 FAX: (212) 633-1165 website: www.marinelog.com e-mail: marinelog@sbpub.com CIRCULATION & SUBSCRIPTIONS: Call toll free (800) 895-4389, Monday-Friday 9 am—5 pm EST. 2 MARINE LOG FEBRUARY 2009 www.marinelog.com http://www.marinelog.com/DOCS/NEWSMMIX/2009jan00161.html http://www.marinelog.com http://www.marinelog.com http://www.marinelog.com/DOCS/NEWSMMIX/2009jan00161.html http://www.abb.com http://www.abb.com http://www.marinelog.com
