Marine Log - March 2008 - (Page 13) ATB tug for U.S. Shipping astern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. recently launched the Galveston, the first of three ABS-classed 150 ft x 46 ft x 27 ft ATB oceangoing tugs for U.S. Shipping Partners, L.P., Edison, N.J. Launched at Eastern’s Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla., the Galveston is designed and engineered by Guarino & Cox of Covington, La. It is outfitted with an Intercon articulated tug and barge (ATB) connection system. It will be mated with a 156,000 bbl ocean tank barge under construction at Bay Shipuilding, Sturgon Bay, Wis., scheduled for delivery later this year. The tug is capable of Conrad’s backlog jumps to $106 million Conrad Industries, Inc., Morgan City, La., has increased its order backlog to $106 million with the recent signing of contracts worth $50.3 million. The contracts are for the construction of 14 barges, two escort tugs, an aluminum ferry and a major ferry repair. Notable among the newbuild orders are four 222 ft x 54 ft x 12 ft LPG inland tank barges. The in new tank barges will have a capacity of 16,000 bbl. The other orders are for barges ranging in size from 120 to 192 ft. Also among the orders for two 98 ft, Robert Allan-designed Z-Tech 7500 Class terminal/escort tugs, similar to four others currently under construction at Conrad’s Orange Shipbuilding in Texas. Conrad also finalized contracts for the construction of a 160 ft, 600-passenger aluminum ferry, as well for the dry dock inspection of and general repairs to a 500-passenger, 150 ft x 28 ft aluminum hull ferry. E operating on heavy fuel oil as well as No. 2 marine diesel fuel oil. To operate the tug while on heavy fuel oil, a thermal oil heating system has been installed with heavy fuel oil pumps and thermal oil piping all provided by SMan/American United Marine. The 12,000 hp heavy fuel oil propulsion package is provided by Wärtsilä Marine as a single source supplier and consists of two Wärtsilä 9L32 main engines, two reduction gears, two 155 in. LIPS/Wärtsilä controllable pitch propellers (CPP) with installed in Kort nozzles and twin high lift rudders.
