Marine Log - March 2008 - (Page 15) Seabulk christens two Z-drive tractor tugs Charles, La., in LNG operations and the other in Port Arthur, Tex. The tugs were built By the Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City, Fla. Each of the tugs is 98 ft x 34 ft with a depth of 14 ft 9 in. Classed by ABS as +A1 Towing, +AMS, Fire Fighting Class (FiFi1), Escort Vessel, the tugs are each fitted with two Cat 3516 B main engines with remote control start/stop capability. Propulsion is supplied by two Schottel SRP 1215 Z-drives. The tugs produce a bollard pull of 71.25 tons. Automation includes a full engine room monitoring system with remote monitoring capability at the helm. Towing gear onboard includes Jon Rie double brake escort winch forward with 450 ft of 7 in. Samson Rope’s Amsteel Blue synthetic rope and one Jon Rie hawser winch with 450 ft of 7 in. Amsteel Blue synthetic rope. FLOATING SAUCERS NEXT The company’s next newbuilding plans could include Ship Docking Modules Seabulk Towing, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., recently held a double christening for a pair of 98 ft Z-drive tractor tugs that will be used for ship docking in the Ports of Tampa and Manatee. “I’ve been working in the industry for 30 years and this is the first time I was involved in a double christening,” says Victor Davis, vice president and general manager of Seabulk Towing. The two tugs are part of a $32 million capital investment by seabulk in series of five Robert Allan Ltd.-designed tractor tugs. Two of the three sisters are working in Lake (SDMs), says Davis. “We call them, ‘floating saucers,’” referring to the tugs unique oval hull design. “These tugs have great maneuverability, but they are strictly harbor tugs. Right now, we operate SDM and our competitor operates two in the Port of Tampa,” he adds. The SDM was specifically developed for ship-assist work in confined harbors by Seabulk in cooperation with the Elliott Bay Design Group, Seattle, Wash. The SDM is powered by twin Z-drives mounted fore and aft and together generating 4,200 horsepower. The unique design of this 90foot tug can produce 100% of its ABS-certified bollard pull of 120,000 lbs. in any direction. www.marinelog.com MARCH 2008 MARINE LOG 15 http://www.greatamericaninsurance.com http://www.greatamericaninsurance.com http://www.marinelog.com
