Utilizing the Nimitz Class hull form, the Ford Class will feature an array of advanced technologies designed ICE CLASS TANKERS FY12 1 2 1 4 1 1 FY13 2 1 1 6 FY09-13 1 8 2 5 18 1 5 2 1 1 3 47 4 2 5 1 1 1 12 1 1 12 3 1 1 to improve warfighting capabilities and allow significant manpower reductions. It will have a new electrical generation and distribution system, an electromagnetic aircraft launching system, a new advanced arresting gear, a new/enlarged flight deck, weapons and material handling improvements, and a smaller crew and air wing (by at least 1,000). The budget provides the second increment of funding for construction of the lead ship, the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN78), and advance procurement funding for CVN79. The DDG 1000 program is described as “the next generation of multi-mission surface combatants tailored for land attack and littoral dominance, with capabilities designed to defeat current and projected threats.” Armed with an array of land attack weapons, DDG 1000 will provide offensive, distributed, and precision firepower at long ranges in support of forces ashore. The FY 2009 budget provides funding for DDG 1002, the third ship of the class, and advance procurement funding for DDG 1003. The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), says the Pentagon, is “envisioned to be a fast, agile, stealthy, relatively small and affordable surface combatant.” As MARINE LOG readers will be only too well aware, somewhere along the way, the “affordable” bit of that started to wander off track. Be that as it may, the Navy is now making major efforts to get LCS acquisition costs in line.
