OFFSHOREDRILLING production quarters (PQ) semi-submersible platform being supported by a separate, dedicated semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU). The PQ floats on four ballasted legs and is moored by 12 tension cables to the seabed. The Atlantis PQ has no drilling rig on it like some other platforms. Instead, the semi-submersible MODU, DD2, drills wells at a drill center to the north of the PQ. The wells flow into subsea manifolds and from there flowlines carry the oil, gas and water to the PQ where they are processed. After processing, the hydrocarbons are moved through the Caesar oil and Cleopatra gas pipeline systems—part of the Mardi Gras system—to existing shelf and onshore interconnections. Integration of the facilities was at the KOS yard in Corpus Christi, Tex. FLOATER OPTIONS Semisubmersibles, such as Atlantis, are not the only option for floating production or storage facilities. Converted monohull tankers have long been a favorite. Indeed, last month two of the three largest tankers ever built, the 2002-built, 442,000 dwt TI Africa and TI Asia, were contracted by Maersk Oil Qatar AS to provide Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) services on the Al Shaheen field offshore Qatar. And, in February, BW Pioneer Ltd, an affiliate of BW Offshore, awarded Singapore’s Keppel Shipyard a contract to convert a tanker into the first FPSO for the Cascade and Chinook fields in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GoM). To be named BW Pioneer, the FPSO will have a storage capacity of about 600,000 barrels of oil, a process capacity of 80,000 bopd and gas export facilities of 16 mmscfd. The unit will be leased by Petrobras America Inc., and production is expected in the first quarter of 2010. When completed in the third quarter of 2009, the FPSO will be turret moored at a water depth of around 2,600 m — the deepest waters ever for an FPSO.
