Its existing engine was replaced with two 228 General Electric eight-cylinder engines, coupled to Reintjes 4 to 1 reduction gears, driving the 85-inch Bollinger stainless steel propellers in 86-in. type 37 kort nozzles with stainless steel inner rings. The rudders are 45° angle for better maneuverability and its new power pack- ICE CLASS TANKERS age is designed to generate over 100,000 lbs of bollard pull. Like its sisters, the Admiral Jackson will provide ship assist/docking services on the lower Mississippi. The nimble, powerful, ice-strengthened tug will be stationed at the Tesoro Alaska Company’s Nikiski refinery in Cook Inlet on a year-round basis to provide enhanced safety and environmental protection for tankers docking there. It is the second tug acquired by Crowley in the last year for use in its Pacific Northwest and Alaska operations. The Vigilant’s hull has been strengthened for use in ice, boasting a 3/8-inch belt of steel along the hull. The vessel’s decks are also heated, along with some of the tanks, for added protection and improved operation. The Vigilant also has a bollard pull in excess of 90 tons. ARTICULATED TUG BARGES In his Tug Boat Market Report, Beegle points out that orders for Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) units “continue to grow especially in the U.S. where about 38% of the current order book are articulated tugs. Demand is expected to continue as new and larger barges are constructed. I do not expect all articulated tugs on today’s order book will be built.
