CRUISESHIPPING formed on the ship’s diesel engines and the ship’s propulsion shafts were pulled at Grand Bahama Shipyard. Another part of the transformation of the Fantasy Class ships is the addition of “Carnival” to each of their names, reinforcing the company’s brand. The next ship to undergo the transformation will be the Carnival Fantasy, which is scheduled to enter Alabama Shipyard, Mobile, Ala., in September. “The Fantasy Class vessels are the most successful series of cruise ships ever introduced, as well as the industry leader in three- to five-day vacations, carrying nearly 1.6 million guests annually,” says Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO. The Carnival Imagination and the 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny will operate new year-round itineraries from the Port of Miami starting next fall. The Carnival Imagination will sail on three-day Bahamas and four-day western Caribbean cruises beginning Sept. 22. The two ships are part of a fleet of 19 vessels that Carnival will deploy in the Caribbean in 2008. In all, Carnival is expected to carry a record 3 million passengers in the region this year—by far the most in its history. The Fantasy Class, which went to sea in 1990, broke new design ground in the cruise ship business with their spectacular atriums. Matched against today’s amenity-laden megaships, the Fantasy Class ships still seem a bit cramped and dated, even with their multi-million-dollar makeovers. However, the ships will still offer a good measure of fun for first time cruisers, singles and families. ML The press was recently treated to a tour of the cruise ship Carnival Imagination (at left) in Miami, following a multimillion-dollar makeover that included a 300 ft, four-deck water side ships that initially began in 2005. Of course, the changes weren’t just cosmetic, pointed out Paolo Mele, director, technical operations at Carnival. Mele cited the upgrade of the bridge instruments, installation of a new deep fat fryer extinguishing system, new propulsion shaft seals, installation of new fresh water production evaporator and a Jets system for black water collection, maintenance on the Hi-Fog system.
