Marine Log - April 2008 - (Page 50) Technews USS New York designed and manufactured with Intergraph The USS New York is the latest ship in the Navy’s Landing Platform Dock (LPD) 17 amphibious assault ship class, designed and manufactured using Intergraph marine design and data management technologies. The ship was designed and built using an integrated data environment (IDE). Intergraph implemented the LPD 17 IDE by combining Intergraph products for computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) with enterprise-wide data management and life The USS New York cycle support. This collaboration is expected to contribute to more than $4 billion in estimated savings over the life of the ship class with an expected decrease in manufacturing re-work and an increase in collaboration and innovation. Intergraph’s SmartMarine Enterprise is the latest marine design and engineering data management software for commercial ship and offshore builders worldwide to speed design, facilitate global workshare and increase productivity. The USS New York, which contains seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the World Trade Center was christened last month (read more about the christening in this month’s update section starting on p. 6), and is the newest of 10 San Antonio-class ships developed by the LPD Avondale Alliance. The Avondale Alliance was created to design, build, and maintain the configuration of the Navy’s next generation of powerful amphibious assault platforms while reducing total ownership cost for the program. Its partners include Intergraph, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and Raytheon.
