(HHI), has received a $1.6 billion Letter of Award (LOA) from Elf Petroleum Nigeria, Ltd. (EPNL), a Nigerian subsidiary of France’s Total S.A., to build a Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading unit (FPSO). The FPSO will measure 320m by 61m, with a depth of 32m. It will be able to produce 160,000 bbl of oil and 5 million m3 of natural gas per day, and will be able to store 2 million bbl of oil. Set for delivery by 2011, the FPSO will be located in the Usan field in 750m of water, 100 km southeast of Bonny Island in Nigeria. ormally, the fifth ship of a class would generate little or no attention. SeaStreak to get new owner The New England Fast Ferry Co., New Bedford, Mass., has inked a deal with a subsidiary of Sea Containers America Inc., to acquire SeaStreak, with its fleet of four catamarans. SeaStreak operates passenger ferries daily between Monmouth County, N.J., and Manhattan. The service carries over 800,000 passengers annually. SeaStreak has been on the block for years. Sea Containers Ltd., has been in Chapter 11 since Oct. 2006. The New England Fast Ferry Company, a sister company of Moran Transportation, Interlake Steamship Company and Mormac Marine Group, operates ferries from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Certain aspects of the sale remain subject to court approval. www.marinelog.com Ship losses jump, says IUMI STATISTICS RECENTLY released by the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) indicate a sharp spike in the number of partial and total ship losses as a result, in part, to the shipping boom itself. IUMI says there were 727 serious incidents reported in 6 MARINE LOG APRIL 2008 increase in one decade IUMI’s Deirdre Littlefield, said the statistics “underline the relentless surge in marine claims that has come about due to a number of factors, not least being the shipping boom itself with ships and crews being driven harder than anyone can remember.” 270% 2006 and 914 incidents so far in 2007. IUMI says this represents a 270% increase in one decade, 1998-2008.
