Royal Caribbean raises fuel surcharge Starting this month, consumers are not only going to feel the pinch of rising fuel costs at the pump, but when they go to sea as well. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced last month that as of May 1, it would increase its fuel charge on first and second guests in a stateroom from $5 to $8 per-person, per-day. Cost per cruise per person will rise from as much as $70 to no more than $112 perperson, per-cruise. Additional guests in a stateroom will be charged $3 perperson, per day, and no more than $42 per-person, per-cruise. The revised fuel supplement will apply to bookings made throughout the world on Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. brands. The new patrol boats can reach speeds of 43 knots Felony charges for Cosco Busan pilot Joseph Cota, pilot of the Cosco Busan, was charged last month with two felony counts for making false statements on the annual physical exam pilots are required to complete every year in order to renew their license. The false statements he made to the U.S. Coast Guard concerned his medications and medical conditions in 2006 and 2007, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ said “the grand jury’s indictment charges that Cota knowingly and willfully made materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statements and representations on the required medical forms” while he, allegedly, knew the information was false. Cota is already facing two misdemeanor charges stemming from the Cosca Busan’s collision with the San Francisco Bay Bridge last November, which caused 50,000 gallons of oil to spill into the bay killing 2,000 birds. Cota could face up to five years in prison and have to pay a $250,000 fine if found guilty on the new charges. 10 MARINE LOG MAY 2008 www.marinelog.com http://www.wortelboer.nl http://www.wortelboer.nl http://www.marinelog.com
