Marine Log - May 2008 - (Page 12) Update Crowley fleet to run on low sulfur diesel Jacksonville, Florida based Crowley Maritime Corporation, one of a small number of tug companies to be fully SQE (Safety, Quality, Environmental) certified, has decided to less emission operate its entire West Coast harbor tug fleet of 15 on ultra into the air low sulfur diesel fuel. Rainer Petroleum, Puget Sound, Wash., will supply the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel to Crowley. The reduction in sulfur will result in 16% less particle matter emitted into the air, says Crowley. Crowley vice president Chris Peterson stated that although Crowley was “not required to switch to ultra low sulfur diesel” it felt it “was the right thing to do for the environment” and for the citizens near the area. This is not the first time Crowley tugs will run on low sulfur diesel, according to Peterson; its California harbor tug fleet has been using the environmentally friendly diesel for some time. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA Rolls-Royce to design polar research vessel 16% R olls-Royce has been selected by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research to design a vessel that will be used to perform environmental research in the North and South poles. The NVC 395 Polar ship is classified Polar 10 class and will be designed to operate in ice up to one meter thick. The vessel’s research operations will include sea floor sampling and mapping, monitoring fish stocks and meteorological studies. According to Einar Vegsund, RollsRoyce design manager, “The Institute has sought creativity in our design and we have drawn on our expertise in such ships to deliver a solution for a technology-intensive ves- sel that can operate in the harshest environments.” The vessel contract is with the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, but all Norwegian research institutes involved in polar research will be able to participate in the development and use of the vessel. Rolls-Royce will draw on its extensive history of ship design which now totals more than 800 ships either built or on order.
