It is a program that we have been asking for for more than two years,” said Rob Zadkovich, assistant vice president, Finance and Business Analysis, Great Lakes Shipyard. Zadkovich was speaking of the federal government’s new Assistance to Small Shipyards Program. Last month, the U.S. Maritime Administration announced $9.8 million in grants awarded to 19 small shipyards under the program (see accompanying table). The grants are for making capital and infrastructure improvements at the shipyards that will help make them more productive and cost-efficient. The grants cover up to 75% of the estimated cost of the improvements, with shipyards covering the remainder. The Assistance to Small Shipyards program was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. The program was authorized for a total of three fiscal years at $10 million annually, but no funds yet have been appropriated for the next two fiscal years. GREAT LAKES SHIPYARD EXPANDS Great Lakes Shipyard, which is part of The Great Lakes Group of companies, Cleveland, Ohio, was the recipient of $546,000, which it will use towards the purchase of an 80-ton mobile crane, man lift and some automated welding equipment. Zadkovich said Great Lakes Shipyard would probably have to invest an additional $180,000 to $250,000 for the equipment. The shipyard, which is currently building Z-drive tugs for its sister company, TUGZ International, LLC, is located on part of the site of the old American Shipbuilding Co. The shipyard built and delivered its first Handysize Class, designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle, Wash., in April. Called the Handy One, the tug is 74 ft x 30 ft, with a draft of 11 ft and designed for coastal towing operations. “We’re situated on five acres now,” said Zadkovich, “but we’d like to expand. We’re working with local and regional governments to do just that. We also have another location where we build portable barges and we’d like to consoliwww.marinelog.com “W Second-tier shipyards such as Great Lakes Shipyard are using the grants for capital improvements to bolster productivity SHIPYARDS AWARDED GRANTS BY MARITIME ADMINISTRATION SHIPYARD ALASKA SHIP & DRYDOCK Ketchikan, AK ALL AMERICAN MARINE Bellingham, WA BROWNSVILLE MARINE PRODUCTS Brownsville, PA COLONNA’S SHIPYARD Norfolk, VA CONRAD SHIPYARD Morgan City, LA DERECKTOR SHIPYARD Bridgeport, CT GLADDING-HEARN SHIPBUILDING Somerset, MA EASTERN SHIPBUILDING GROUP Panama City, FL EVERETT SHIPYARD Everett, WA GREAT LAKES SHIPYARD Cleveland, OH GULF MARINE REPAIR CORP.
