Marine Log - May 2008 - (Page 32) SHIPBUILDING date our operations.” Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Somerset, Mass., is in the midst of an expansion. It recently added a 12,000 ft2 fabrication building, with two 50 ft bays for constructing modules, and two overhead cranes. Gladding-Hearn builds both in aluminum and steel, including ferries, pilots boats and tugs. In addition, the MarAd grant will allow the shipyard to upgrade its railway launch system and extend its dock. Another recipient of a MarAd grant, Derecktor Shipyards is seeking zoning approval to expand its Bridgeport, Conn., facility. The company would reportedly build three new structures as part of its expansion, including a new block assembly building. Derecktor builds ferries, fireboats and tugs. ML ICE CLASS TANKERS NSRP ASE projects look to save taxpayer dollars on Navy shipbuilding etting the American taxpayer the “biggest bang for the buck“ is the goal of 10 new research and development projects selected jointly by a Navy and marine industry-funded program. Last month at a meeting in Charleston, S.C., the executive board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) announced the selection of R&D projects valued at $18 million. The projects were in response to an NSRP solicitation in November 2007. While all of the projects are aimed at improving shipbuilding and ship repair productivity and efficiency, they also have some implications G for commercial activity as well. One of the projects we found most intriguing was the development of a computer simulation that will enable shipbuilders to analyze the impact of the effects of current and new ship production work on a shipyard’s operations. Participants in the $2.5 million project include NASSCO, Atlantec Enterprise Solutions, Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Inc., ShipConstructor Software USA and Tra n S y s t e ms / Au t o ma t io n Associates. Here’s a quick rundown of all the projects: • Development of Manufacturing & Assembly Technology for Low Cost Pultruded Composites; • Practical Applications of Design for Producibility; • Shipbuilding Partners & Suppliers (SPARS) 701; • Large Scale Computer Simulation Modeling System for Shipbuilding; • Advanced Systems Development for a Remote Climbing Robot for Automated Welding Processes in the Shipbuilding Industry; • Smart “As-Built” Model Modification; • Modern Shipbuilding Design; • Virtual Welding—A Low Cost Virtual Reality Training System; • Customization of Web-Based Planning & Production Engineering to Support Integrated Shipyard Work Flow; • Improved Methods for Generation of Full Ship Simulation/Analysis Models 2.
