Marine Log - May 2008 - (Page 38) BY SHIRLEY DEL VALLE Gateway to the PUERTO RICO’S PLAN TO KEEP THE CRUISE WORLD INTERESTED uerto Rico is doing everything in its power to keep the cruise industry interested in coming to its shore. With the possibility of losing cruise business to Europe, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) is making sure that the island’s ports and the island itself are positioned to create an ideal vacation spot for cruise-enthusiasts, according to PRTC executive director Terestella González Denton. During a press conference at Seatrade Cruise Shipping in Miami this past March, González-Denton called Puerto Rico the “Gateway to the Caribbean.” She explained that PRTC’s plan is to decentralize P tourism away from metropolitan areas. Central to that strategy is adding hotel rooms and five-star luxury hotels, investing in port infrastructure and creating incentive packages for cruise lines and travel agents. IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME Plans call for Puerto Rico to add 5,000 hotel rooms by the end by 2011. The island will also feature, for the first time, five 5 Star hotels. GonzálezDenton believes new hotel rooms will lead to a better customer experience, before and after a cruise. She suggested that with millions of dollars invested in the island’s hotels, Puerto Rico will become a major player in the high class luxury game. For example, the first W Hotel and Spa Resort in the Caribbean will open on the island of Vieques in 2009. The money, however, isn’t just going to hotels. Major investment is pouring into the ports, which attract a little over 1.5 million passengers a year. “We will be investing close to $1 billion by 2012, with $400 million going to the Port of San Juan and $400 million to the Port of Mayaguez,” said González-Denton. An additional $135 million is going to the construction of the Port of the Americas in Ponce.
