Technews ZF Marine propels Earthrace towards a second world record attempt Earthrace, a 78 ft wave-piercing trimaran powerboat, will attempt to break the world speed record currently held by Britain’s Cable and Wireless Adventurer. The non-profit, “carbon neutral” Earthrace is one of the world’s most environmentally friendly powerboats, running on 100% biodiesel. It was built by Calibre Boats in New Zealand and is powered by two new 540 HP Cummins Mercruiser engines driving through ZF 305 A transmissions. The engines were supplied by ZF Padova Spa, Italy. ZF Marine also supplied the original gearboxes for the first attempt to break the world record in 2007. The attempt had to be called off due to structural damage sustained by Earthrace. The boat endured a monsoon, 50 knot head winds and a storm in the course of three weeks. Pete Bethune, Earthrace’s skipper says, “It’s fantastic that ZF Marine are continuing their relationship with our project. We know that their products are the best in the world, and with their gearboxes on board, together with a global service network, we know we will have the best chance of breaking the world record.” The boat began its attempt to break the world speed record in late April. The presentation of Puccini’s “La Boheme” was shown in early The Caribbean Princess’ Movies Under the Stars April as part of the Met’s series of eight opera performances transmitted live via satellite to movie theaters around the world. The event was made possible by Seamobile’s MTN Satellite Services. On vessels equipped with “Movies Under the Stars,” passengers were able to watch the production under the night sky. Movies Under the Stars is featured on Caribbean Princess, Crown Princess, Emerald Princess, Grand Princess and Sea Princess.
