Three handysize bulk carriers, the MV Dove, the MV Heron and the MV Antwerpen all had their tank tops reinstated using SPS (Sandwich Plate System) Overlay at Cosco Zhoushan in China. The way SPS Overlay works is that it uses existing steelwork, which has been blasted and cleaned, to form the underside of the composite “sandwich.” Perimeter bars and new plates are welded in place creating cavities that are injected with a fast-setting elastomer. According to SMT founder and chairman Ton Voorham, “SPS Overlay provides firstclass repairs and is ideally suited to our maintenance requirements; it is simple, fast and non-intrusive.” SPS Overlay is faster and less disruptive than conventional crop-and-replace techniques, and has enhanced resistance to corrosion, fatigue, fire, impact and vibration. Rob Duffin, director of SPS Overlay, believes that SPS Overlay “offers a substantial opportunity for owners who want to minimize down time during repairs and extend the lives of their older vessels.” www.ie-sps.com The MV Antwerpen had its tank top reinstated using SPS Overlay DON’T TAKE A RISK insure with FISK!
