Marine Log - May 2008 - (Page 8) Update Offshore wind farm proposed by Winergy While a plan for a floating LNG terminal in Long Island Sound appears to have been sunk, a proposal for an offshore wind farm could very well gain momentum. Winergy Power LLC, Happauge, N.Y., has proposed developing a wind farm 12 to 18 miles off the coast of south Long Island. The project, which could include up to 260 wind turbines and generate up to 940 MW of power, might be up and running by 2014. A Winergy Power subsidiary, Atlantic Power, has developed an offshore wind turbine called a Mobile Self-Installing Platform that can be pre-assembled and towed to a location up to 20 miles offshore and used in water depths of up to 150 ft, according to the company. The Ingleside, Tex. , ocean towing and bulk shipping company recently added the first of two 98 ft Z-drive tugs and planned to open a new office in Dubai, U.A.E. The M/V America, delivered last month, is a 6,610 hp tug built by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Wash. The America, along with its sister vessel, the M/V Stars & Stripes, represent an investment of more than $21 million by Signet Maritime. Both vessels, designed by Robert Allan Ltd., Vancouver, B.C., Canada, were originally built for operations at the FERC-approved Vista del Sol LNG terminal being developed at the La Quinta Ship Channnel near Ingleside. While the terminal is under development, Signet will charter the two tugs to Foss Maritime Co., Seattle, Wash., under an alliance agreement announced by the two companies in late Jan. 2008. Foss will assign one of the tugs to North Puget Sound and the second to The M/V America, one of two new Z-drive tugs built for Signet Maritime one of the West Coast ports it serves. In turn, Signet will lease two vessels from Foss, one a conventional twinscrew tug for towing operations and a newly built Dolphin Class tug for harbor operations. In addition, Ryan J. Smith is expected to be named president of Signet International, the company’s new office in Dubai, which will support the company’s expanding ocean towing services for the international offshore oil industry. Super semi sails to Norway he 16,000-tonne, 120m long hull substructure for the first Aker H-6e semi-submersible offshore drilling rig was recently completed by Aker Solutions at Drydocks World’s Dubai yard. The hull will be towed to Aker Solutions’ yard at Stord on the west coast of Norway, and will be mated with the topside facility and undergo further construction work prior to delivery. Aker Solutions has designed and is T building two H-6e drilling rigs—Aker Spitsbergen and Aker Barents—for Aker Drilling. The H-6e rigs have been designed to meet the challenges of deepwater drilling operations in harsh environments, with the ability to drill in water depths up to 3,000 meters using dynamic positioning, with a maximum drill string length of 10,000 meters. Drilling operations will be mainly con- ducted within enclosed areas of the topside facilities, for safe, year-round operations.
