Update Aker Yard Marine’s Offshore Patrol Vessels Aker Yards Marine has teamed up with Babcock Marine, Plymouth, England, to supply the Irish Navy with a second generation OPV. The Naval Service has two existing 78m OPV’s that have been operating since 2001. The Le Roisin and Le Niamh, were both designed by AYM in collaboration with a subsidiary of Babcock Marine, Appledore Shipbuilders Limited. The new OPV design is to be 82m. In New Zealand, the Otago, the first Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) 85m OPV, has completed its sea trials and will soon be delivered to RNZN. Otago is one of the two 85m OPV’s the Navy has acquired under Project Protector. The vessel was designed by AYM and built by Tenix Shipbuilding near Melbourne, Australia. The second OPV, the Wellington, will be delivered at the end of 2008. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA NCL to pay $14.75 million in S.S. Norway case orwegian Cruise Line Limited (NCL), Miami, Fla., will pay more than $14.75 million after pleading guilty to negligence in connection with the May 2003 boiler explosion aboard the S.S. Norway that killed eight crew members and injured 10 others. The district court judge in the proceedings, Federico Moreno, sentenced NCL to pay a $1 million fine and ordered a preliminary restitution to the victims in the case of $13,750,000. According to the documents filed in the case and statements made in court, NCL admitted that it had failed to insure the proper inspections, maintenance, and repairs of boiler components were carried out. The company agreed that as the operator of the former NCLL vessel, it will assume legal responsibility. N The National Transportation Safety Board’s report concluded that the failure of the boiler system was the result of inadequate care for the maintenance, operation, and inspection of the vessel’s boilers. The boiler exploded when a weld on a seam of a high-pressure drum fractured causing almost 20 tons of high temperature water—that turned into steam —invaded the engine spaces and some crew berthing areas, resulting in the deaths and injuries. The NTSB further noted that the system had a history of fatigue cracking, corrosion, and pitting since the 1970’s. The S.S. Norway is no longer in service.
