Eight of the Carnival family of brands account for 47 % of the total orderbook, while Royal Caribbean brands account for another 25 %. CRUISE INDUSTRY CONCENTRATION The cruise industry continues to expand its global reach with new brand development and partnerships, which provide opportunities to enter new markets or strengthen existing positions, and an outlet for cascading older ships as new construction is introduced to principal markets. Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) announced it would withdraw a second ship (Pride of Aloha) from Hawaii, leaving only one ship operating there. After failed attempts to sell the vessel, NCL plans to operate the vessel on short cruises from Miami. Norwegian Dream and Norwegian Majesty have been sold to Louis Cruise Lines and chartered back until completion of current schedules. TUI Cruises, the new German brand, will begin operations in May 2009 with the Celebrity Galaxy, followed by two newbuilds planned for 20112012. Ambassadors International announced plans to sell its Majestic America brand this year and to focus on Windstar Cruises, purchased last year from Carnival. Making its maiden voyage to the North Pole in June, the nuclear powered icebreaker 50 Years of Victory joins the Quark Expeditions fleet in the burgeoning expedition cruise segment. Quark was purchased last year by TUI Travel. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency is considering a new interpretation of the Passenger Vessel Services Act that could have far-reaching impact upon North American cruise operations. The proposed rule would require foreign-flag operators sailing round-trip from U.S. ports to spend at least 48 hours in a foreign port and devote more than half the cruise to foreign-port content. The proposed rule has generated hundreds of public comments regarding its scope and the economic losses faced by ports and states if applied outside the Hawaiian trade. CRUISE TRAFFIC The European cruise market passed 4 million passengers for the first time, up 15% in 2007 and almost 50% since 2003. The UK accounts for one-third of the European market, and grew by 11% in 2007 to exceed 1.3m passengers. The German market grew 8% in 2007 to 763,000 passengers (19% of the European market). Italy grew to 640,000 passengers (up 24%), with Costa and MSC Cruises accounting for 96% of that market. The number of Spaniards cruising in 2007 rose 32% to 518,000, with Pullmantur, Costa and Iberojet Cruceros accounting for 76% of the market. Passengers carried on North American cruises topped 10 million for the first time in 2007, with 77% moving through the 10 principal ports. However, the 10.3 million passengers carried on 4,464 cruises were up only 3.2% from 2006.
