Marine Log - June 2008 - (Page 39) WORLDSHIPBUILDING believe with each week seeming to bring a clutch of major orders, however $35 billion still buys a lot of ships, particularly at Chinese prices). According to Stopford, bulk carriers have dominated investment, with $88 billion worth of contracts placed in 2007, compared with $35 billion worth of tankers and $44.1 billion worth of containerships. Gas tanker investment had slipped to $7 billion from $13.2 billion in the previous year. Stopford says the marine equipment order book is around $250 billion, with sales in 2007 of about $115 billion. Both figures set new records for the industry. Stopford says that European owners continue to dominate ship investment. EU countries ordered $98.7 billion worth ships in 2007, twice as much as investors in East Asia who contracted $48.7 billion. Greece was the biggest investor, placing orders for $35.9 billion of new vessels, followed closely by Germany with orders for $30.9 billion (Stopford did not get intohow much of the Greek investment was actually backed by American investor money pumped in via the NASDAQ). China took the third position, investing $18.9 billion, and Norwegian owners invested $15.2 billion. Stopford notes that despite the large orderbook world shipbuilding deliveries increased by only 5 % in 2007 (from 75.8 million dwt to 80 million dwt). However, he says that shipyards are now moving into a new expansion phase, as facilities developed since the boom have begun to come into service. If the orderbook is delivered on schedule, in the next three years output will increase by over Shipbuilding Output by Country & Orderbook Source: Clarkson’s Research SERIOUS AIR FOR SERIOUS PLACES Confined Space Air Ventilators 8”, 12” & 20” Models Portable Lightweight 848-8000 CFM, 110/220V 12V DC Pneumatic Americ Corporation 785 Bonnie Lane Elk Grove Village, IL 60007 For more information, call 800-364-4642 or Fax 847-364-4695 www.americ.com www.marinelog.com JUNE 2008 YEARBOOK MARINE LOG 39 http://www.centa.info http://www.americ.com http://www.centa.info http://www.americ.com http://www.marinelog.com
