Marine Log - June 2008 - (Page 47) BY NICK BLENKEY OFFSHOREVESSELS FITTING THE ULTRA DEEPWATER PIECES TOGETHER W hen the FPSO BW Pioneer comes on station on the Petrobras Cascade-Chinook project (slated for 2010) it will mark at least two significant milestones. One of these is that it will be the first FPSO deployed in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The other is that its location in the Walker Ridge area, approximately 165 miles offshore Louisiana, in 8,200 feet (2,500 m) of water, will be the deepest water deployment thus far of any FPSO, anywhere. The U.S. Minerals Management Service approved the project after a thorough environmental and technical review. Interestingly, when FPSO’s were first proposed for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, it seemed likely that only a double hulled newbuilding would make the environmental cut. In fact, BW Pioneer is being converted from a 1981-built, 155,000 dwt single hull tanker ex-Genie, previously owned by Eurotankers. Seadrill semisubmersible West Sirius (right) will soon start work in the Gulf of Mexico for Devon Energy. BW Pioneer (below) will be the first FPSO in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico BW Offshore’s contract with Petrobras is for up to eight years including option periods of up to three years. It includes delivery and installation of an APL disconnectable Submerged Turret Production Buoy (STP) including fluid swivel and mooring system.
