Contract commitments and known demand for floaters, especially for deepwater units, stretches further into the future than for jackups, notes the Platou Report. As oil and gas companies are increasing their emphasis on fields in deeper waters, floater demand is increasing more than jackup demand. Deepwater demand is also increasing more than midwater. Platou notes that a number of midwater semisubmersibles have been upgraded to operate in deeper water, creating a shortage in the midwater segment and giving significant increases in dayrates for this sector. It will also be interesting to follow the development of average time spent on each well for floaters operating in deep/ultra-deepwater, given the increased complexity of drilling at these water depths. This could have an important additional impact on the number of units needed in this segment in the future. ABSORBING NEW JACKUPS Platou recorded 57 new orders in 2007, bringing the orderbook in relation to the existing fleet to just above 25%. At year end, the orderbook showed 25 drillships, 42 semisubmersibles and 83 jackups on order. Platou says it will be interesting to see how easily the market will absorb the 32 jackups expected to be delivered in 2008. The floater fleet stood virtually still in 2007 but will increase by three drillships and 13 semisubmersibles in 2008. Meantime, the current fleet is a lot like Hollywood—with many elderly stars still doing the job thanks to substantial overhauls and facelifts!
