TEXAS HIGHWAY CONNECTOR The Texas Department of Transportation (TDOT) awarded a $22.5 million contract to Conrad Industries, Morgan City, La., in 2007 to build a 264 ft x 66 ft x 15 ft 6 in passenger/vehicle ferry. Scheduled for delivery in 2009, the ferry will transport up to 70 cars and operate between Galveston and Port Bolivar. The 2.7 mile route joins two segments of Texas State Highway 87, providing the only connection for motorists between Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Island. The ferry operation consists of five boats, each of which can carry approximately 70 vehicles, 500 passengers and six crewmembers. Each ferry is capable of carrying eight 18-wheel trucks weighing 80,000 pounds each. All of the boats are double-ended with a pilothouse on each end, and the captain changes from one pilothouse to the other to go in the opposite direction.
