Marine Log - July 2008 - (Page G15) GULF COAST HEADLINER Austal launches LCS-2 Independence This past April, Austal launched the U.S. Navy’s 127m Littoral Combat Ship Independence (LCS 2). The high speed warship is designed to work in all types of coast waters and carry out a range of operations. The 127m vessel’s trimaran seaframe—designed by Austal—is the platform for the LCS’s mission and weapons system. Independence’s long , slender central hull and the additional smaller side hulls provide the vessel with superior seakeeping, while the hullform provides a large internal mission deck with a high payload carrying capacity. Independence is one of two alternative ship designs the Navy will evaluate as part of its 313-ship plan. During a Pentagon media roundtable held in February, Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, Admiral Gary Roughhead, stated that the LCS fills the gap for the Navy, in what he considaccommodate the U.S. Navy’s largest helicopter, an H-53. The vertical location of the flight provides the hightest flight deck elevation on a combatant ship other than a major amphibious vessel or aircraft carrier. The U.S. Navy is calling for the total construction of 55 Littoral Combat Ships. LCS-2 Independence LCS-2 during its launch ers “green water.” Roughhead said, “[The]LCS is the best ship to fill the gap. It has the speed. It has the shallow draft that expands the amount of area in which we can operate.” An additional perk to the LCS-2 is its flight deck. Located above the Mission bay, it has the space for dual H-60 helicopter operations to be conducted.
