Marine Log - July 2008 - (Page G19) Great White Towing in Louisiana Great White Towing LLC, Amelia, La., was formed in 2007, the company currently has 15 employees. According to the president and general manager Dennis Mahaffey, offices are currently being set up on the 14.5 acre base. The company’s fleet includes three brand new 52 x 22 ft pusher boats. The Great White 1, 2 and 3 were built at the Serodino shipyard, Chattanooga, Tenn. The Great White 1 and 2’s propulsion are provided by two 600 hp Cummins KTA19 M3 engines while the Great White 3 is fitted with a pair of Tier 2 compliant Cummins QSK19 M3 main engines. Each towboat will have the ability to push a standard double-skinned 195 x 65 x 10 ft crude oil barge with a 10,000 bbl capacity. All three vessels feature Twin Disc MG5222DC gears with 4.03:1 ratios. Cummins is also supplying the electrical generators. Great White Towing’s pusher boats will be able to push a standard doubleskinned barge Shell Perdido will use Zentech’s aluminum Helideck Zentech, Inc., Houston, Tex., is supplying an Astach enhanced safety aluminum helideck to Delta Engineering Corporation for use on the Shell Perdido Regional Host Spar. The helideck system was manufactured by Aluminum Offshore Pty. Ltd., and features an automatic fire suppression system assuring safter take offs and landings. According to John Hanney, Area Director of United Technologies Sikorsky, “the design offers cost, weight and maintainability advantages.” Already installed in offshore vessels and structures, the system has been approved by ABS, DNV, BV, Lloyds and the United States Coast Guard.
