Marine Log - July 2008 - (Page G3) GULF COAST HEADLINER The Perdido spar was shipped via the Mighty Servant I from Finland to Ingleside, Tex. DESTINED FOR ULTRA-DEEP WATERS W hile the debate rages in Washington as to whether to lift the long-standing ban on offshore drilling and to open the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) to oil exploration, one of the most technically challenging oil and gas projects in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico moved one step closer to reality. Arriving in Ingleside, Tex., last month aboard the Dockwide heavy lift ship Mighty Servant I was the hull of what will be the world’s deepest oil and gas spar production facility, the Perdido Regional Development. Using cutting-edge technology, the Perdido Spar will drill, gather and process oil and gas from three fields. Moored in about 7,800 ft of water, it will be capable of delivering 130,000 bbl of oil equivalent per day (100,000 bbl of oil and 200 million ft3 of gas per day). Perdido is scheduled to begin production around the turn of the decade. The Perdido will be Shell’s first spar. Shell considered several production and export systems alternatives, but in the end decided on the spar concept for a number of reasons, including: • The desire to have a high well count with full drilling, completion and sidetracking capability from a low-cost platform drilling rig and • The existence of a significant pipeline transportation network in the area with available capacity.
