Marine Log - August 2007 - (Page 12) Update Austal USA adds panel line shop Austal USA , Mobile, Ala., recently opened a new 9,000 ft2 panel line shop on the north side of Assembly Bay 1. The shop was added to the building where the two U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) are under construction. In addition to the Panel Line Shop, Austal is also in the process of constructing an addition to its southernmost assembly bay, where the second Hawaii Superferry vessel is under construction, to include a Router/Fitout Shop to be completed in Dec. 2007. This building will house a recently purchased high-speed router cutter which is designed specifically to support aluminum ship construction. The equipment is operated with data from numerical cutting files of the required nested parts and enables the minimization of waste and the efficient recovery of scrap material. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA First ROPAX order for Singapore ingapore Technologies Marine Ltd. will be the first Singapore yard to build a Roll-on/Roll-off passenger ferry (ROPAX), following the signing of a S$168 million ($110.9 million) contract with France’s Louis Dreyfus Armateurs S.A.S. (LDA). The contract has an option for a second vessel. ST Marine has begun designing the ROPAX and construction will start in first half of 2008, with delivery in the first half of 2010. With this order, LDA is building three vessels with ST Marine, including two Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) vessels S ordered last year in association with Norway’s Leif Hoegh & Co. AS (LH). The RORO’s will be used to transport Airbus A380 aircraft components. The total value of the LDA contracts with ST Marine is S$288m. The 4,000-dwt ROPAX will have a length overall of 161m and beam of 25.6m wide, and will operate on the English Channel for day and night crossing. The 930-passenger vessel will be designed to carry trailers and cars, with a RORO lane capacity of about 1,500m and car lane capacity of about 2,290m.
