Marine Log - August 2007 - (Page 15) Big Japanese cat delivered by Incat ne of the largest highspeed aluminum catamaran ferries in the world was recently delivered by Incat Tasmania in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, to Japanese operator Higashi Nihon. The Natchan Rera is the first of two 112m x 30m catamarans that will each carry 1,500 passengers and up to 355 cars on a route between Honshu and O Hokkaido. MAN Diesel supplied eight of its largest, 20-cylinder versions of the four-stroke, 28/33 D engines, each rated 9,000 kW at 1,000 rev/min, for the Natchan Rera and its sister. These are the first orders received for the 28/33 D diesel since the engine’s transfer from MAN Diesel’s U.K. facilities to its engine works in Augsburg, Germany. The total installed power of 36 MW will provide the Natchan Rera with a full load speed of 40 knots. The 112m catamarans are fitted with two 20-cylinder The Natchan Rera, the first of two 112m high-speed ferries for Japanese owner Higashi Nihon, feature four MAN Diesel 20-cylinder 28/33 D diesel engines (inset, at left) engines in each of the twin aluminum hulls, where they drive high capacity reversible waterjets via reduction gears with horizontal offset input and output shafts. The total installed power of 36 MW gives the cata- marans a loaded speed of 40 knots. The engines drive high capacity reversible water-jets via reduction gears with horizontal offset input and output shafts. www.marinelog.com AUGUST 2007 MARINE LOG 15 http://www.marinelog.com
