Marine Log - August 2007 - (Page 28) Sept. 20-21, 2007 Washington Marriott, Washington, D.C. How Big is your THAT’S A QUESTION THAT MORE AND more legislators and regulators are asking businesses, given the reality of global climate change. Pressure is already mounting on the maritime industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Earlier this year, for example, the U.S. proposed to IMO a series of amendments to MARPOL Annex VI that would dramatically reduce air pollution from ships by establishing a new tier of performancebased standards for marine diesel engines on all vessels. It would also establish stringent emission rules for ships that operate in coastal areas where air quality problems are acute. The amendments would apply to both newbuilds and existing vessels. Clearly, this has far-reaching implications for the shipping industry, as well as engine Carbon Footprint? manufacturers and suppliers. Air emissions are just one of the topics that will be discussed extensively at Marine Log’s Global Greenship 2007 Conference & Expo, which is scheduled for Sept. 20-21, 2007 at the Washington Marriott in Washington, D.C. Other topics to be explored include: • Ballast water management • Environmental crimes • Future vessel design • Alternative fuels • Ship recycling and scrapping See the agenda on the facing page for more details. The idea behind the two-day executive conference is to offer practical guidance on current and future environmental regulations and policies.
