Marine Log - August 2007 - (Page 40) TUGS ICE CLASS TANKERS designed by Robert Allan Ltd., Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and built at Orange Shipbuilding, Orange, Tex. The RAmparts 3000 Class tug is 99 ft x 36 ft x 17ft and is equipped with two Schottel SRP 1212 fixed pitch Z-Drives, driven by remanufactured EMD 12-645-E7 medium-speed diesel engines. Construction oversight services were handled by Bristol Harbor Group. Z-TECH TUG FOR PORT OF HOUSTON Yet another Robert Allan-designed was delivered to Suderman and Young Towing Company, L.P., Houston, Tex. Christened “Thor,” the 98 ft tug is unique in that it is the first ZTech drive tug in the Western Hemisphere and only fifth of its kind worldwide. So what’s a Z-Tech? Put simply, the Z-Tech incorporates the best aspects of the standard tug Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) and Z-drive configurations. Suderman & Young says the 360 degree turning wheel improves maneuverability while the Thor Z-Tech’s much larger skeg boosts towing capability and directional stability. The Z-Tech design will enable the tug to efficiently handle larger container vessels that are expected to call at the Port of Houston’s Bayport facility following the deepening and widening of the Houston Ship Channel, according to Suderman & Young president Lamar Doyle. Propulsion will be supplied by a pair of isolation-mounted 3,149-hp Cat 3516 C HD main engines that will drive Schottel fixed pitch SRP 1520 Rudderpropellers. Thor will have a minimum of 75 tons bollard pull. ML Suderman & Young’s 98 ft 6 in Thor is the first Z-Tech tug to operate in the Western Hemisphere room. The pumps supply two FFS IM/FFS-1200LB electric FiFi 1 monitors mounted on the aft upper deck. The monitors can be controlled locally or form the pilothouse. The firefighting system also includes a deluge sprinkler system and eight fire stations located on the main deck. TUG FOR PUERTO RICO Another Schottel Z-drive, the new 4,300 hp harbor tug Hector P., recently entered service in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, following a week-long delivery trip from Texas.
