Marine Log - August 2008 - (Page 10) Update PGC acquires GE marine gear product line Philadelphia Gear Corporation (PGC), King of Prussia, Pa., purchased the majority of General Electric Corporation’s (GE) marine gear product lines. With the acquisition, PGC will obtain all intellectual property, equipment and transition assistance to broaden its existing capabilities to manufacture main reduction gear assemblies. The purchase, however, does not include the CVN-78 Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Product line, which will continue to be produced by GE. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA Keppel to supply Scorpion with its first semi rig ermuda-based Scorpion Offshore has placed a contract worth $405 million with Keppel FELS Limited for its first semi-submersible rig (semi), design DSS 38 deepwater unit. The DSS 38 can drill depths of 30,000 feet below mud line in just over 9,000 feet of water depth. The semi has housing facilities for up to 130 men. The rig has eight 3,000 kW azimuth thrusters designed to keep the vessel in position. Upon its completion in the fourth quarter of B 2011, the semi will be chartered by Scorpion to Brazilian national oil company Petrobras for a period of six years. This latest rig is the third DSS 38 rig to be contracted. The first two went to Brazil’s Queiroz Galvao. Port of Galveston inks loan deal The Port of Galveston, Tex., inked a $28.1 million infrastructure improvement loan through the Texas Industry Development Loan Program. The funds will be used to revitalize and modernize the port’s aging infrastructure.
