Marine Log - August 2008 - (Page 44) Technews Evergreen to help in measuring greenhouse emissions Evergreen Line will cooperate with Cambridge University, UK and the National Central University in Taiwan on the Pacific Greenhouse Gases Measurement (PGGM) project. The PGGM is currently combining data from FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC satellites, commercial aircraft, and Evergreen containerships to build a three-dimensional distribution of greenhouse gases over the Pacific. The data will determine the total amount of greenhouse emissions in the Pacific region, in addition, it will help estimate the key contributions from Taiwan in terms of global warming and climate change. Evergreen is expected to gather data from two specific routes consisting of Europe to Asia and Asia to Australia on S-type and Ptype vessels, which will be outfitted with data recorders. www.evergreenmarine.co.uk ABB releases new series of turbochargers ABB Turbocharging, Baden, Switzerland, has released the A140-H, the first of its all new generation of turbochargers in the A100-H series. ABB introduced and delivered the A140-H turbocharger for field installations and trials. Featuring three new compressor stages, the A140-H has optimized impellers, and new high-pressure diffusers. In addition it features a newly developed turbine stage that includes gas inlet and outlet casings. The company developed the A100-H turbocharger series for future engine concepts. The series offers maximum pressure ratios of up to 5.8, in addition to supporting highspeed diesel and gas engine development programs that are aimed at higher power densities and efficiences as well as lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption. The A100-H line will be followed by the A100-M and the A100-L series, targeted for the medium- and low- speed type engines. A few months ago ABB announced the expansion of its compact turbocharger family. The company had already released the first two in the TPS44-F series with the third, the TPS44-F33 expected to be released later this year. The TPS F family meets the specific requirements of smaller high speed deisel and gas engines.
