Marine Log - October 2007 - (Page 12) Update Marine Oil Services building mini-tankers Marine Oil Services, Norfolk, Va., has two small double-hull tankers on order from C&G Boat Works, Mobile, Ala. Each of the small ships has tankage for up to 52,626 gal of bunker fuel and will be powered by a pair of Cummins’ Tier 2-complaint QSK19-M engines each rated for 600 hp at 1,800 rev/min. Power for the electric bow thruster and other vessel needs will come from two Cummins 6BT5.9-DMpowered 65kW generator sets. The two vessels will be named Sunny Williams, after the founder’s wife, and Emma Miller after the current president Burt Miller’s mother. Sunny Williams will be delivered in March of 2008, while Emma Miller will be delivered five months later, in August. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA TUGZ building Handysize tugs TUGZ International, LLC has identified a niche in the tug, harbor vessel and fireboat market that it hopes to fill with a “Handysize” tug design developed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle, Wash. TUGZ is building two “Handysize” 2,800 hp, 74 ft x 30 ft tugs at its affiliate Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio. Both firms are part of the Great Lakes Group. Ronald C. Rasmus, group president, said, “Studies have shown that there are more than 1,500 U.S. flag tugs over 30 years old in the less than 3,000 hp range that will need to be replaced over the next few years. Owners of this handysize range are looking for a low cost, fuel efficient, versatile workhorse, and our new ‘Handysize’ Class tug design just fits the need.” The tugs are being built to ABS ice class standards, with 5/8 in steel plate and tighter framing at the bow and stern to increase operational life. The Great Lakes Shipyard will build the tugs for sale or for lease-purchase or charter through its affiliate TUGZ. The tugs now under construction will be delivered in Nov. 2007 and April 2008, respectively. The tugs are available with azimuthing stern drives or with nozzled, twinscrew propulsion. Propulsion for the first tug will be supplied by two Cummins QSK 38 diesels, which drive 72 in diameter Kaplan type propellers inside Type 37 stainless steel lined nozzles via Twin Disk MG 540 marine gears. 12 MARINE LOG OCTOBER 2007 www.marinelog.com http://www.schottel.de http://www.schottel.de http://www.marinelog.com
