This would mean that the fourth vessel in the series would be delivered in late 2012 or early 2013 (see graphic of projected timeline). Rising material costs will push the price tag for the four boats to $347 million. The new ferries will offer passengers major improvements over the 80-yearold Steel Electric Class vessels and enable the WSF to retire the riveted-hull boats and expand service to meet projected passenger growth demand. The aging Steel Electric Class ferries have posed operational challenges to the WSF. The Illahee is currently undergoing repairs for a cracked stern tube, while the Klickitat underwent repairs for a cracked hull this past March. The new ferries will most likely be deployed on the Anacortes-San Juan Island, Seattle-Bremerton, and Mukilteo-Clinton routes, but will have the ability to operate on any of the system’s routes. Building ferries for WSF is nothing new for Todd. The shipyard built the system’s three 460 ft Jumbo Mark II Ferries from 1995 to 1999. The Tacoma, Wenatchee, and Puyallup are all-steel double-ended diesel-electric ferries with capacity of 2,500 passengers and 218 automobiles. www.marinelog.com OCTOBER 2007 MARINE LOG 27 http://www.mmcintl.com http://www.mmcintl.com http://www.donjon.com http://www.donjon.com http://www.marinelog.com
