Marine Log - October 2007 - (Page 36) Diamond 53 Glaiglas, the largest ship thus far built in Vietnam one. Compared to the two Diamonds we had from China this one has increased dwt, slightly lower fuel consumption and the steelwork and accommodation are better. Also the vibration has been removed, so these are far better ships than the first ones from Chinese yards.” Dilip Nair, General Manager, Fleet Management Limited, says, “We manage eight Diamonds from Chinese yards and now the first from Vietnam. These are very user friendly, very strong ships, built to last. While the commissioning was harder because it was a new yard, this Vietnam-built ship has benefited from a lot of improved details.” Vinashin is to build a further 27 Diamond 53s at Nam Trieu and Ha Long, and also 10 Diamond 34s at Pha Rung. Meantime, the Vinashin Diamond design order book has grown to $1 billion and currently runs to 2011. Graig, Vinashin and their Diamond partners say they are keen to build on their cooperation, with further orders for upgraded 53s and 34s, possibly at new yards, and also new designs needed by the market in other sectors. Graig has also been busy outside Vietnam. In 2005, working with Indian trading company Goodearth Maritime Ltd (GML), Graig undertook to provide the vessel design, brokerage, yard supervision, procurement and yard consultancy services for a series of six firm orders plus three options for Diamond 53 double-hull 53,000 dwt handymax bulkers at the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd, Visakhapatnam. The first vessel will be delivered to GML this year. And Vinashin has leveraged its success with Graig to find some other significant international partners. Vinashin’s aim is to be the world’s fourth largest shipbuilder rather than its tenth and is to invest $3 billion in development over the next decade. Vinashin’s current orderbook includes contracts worth up to $12.3 billion, of which $10 billion is for export. Vinashin has been expanding yard capacity in line with a three phase Industry Development Program that set goals for the 2002 - 2005 period of upgrading and renewing technology at the existing shipyards: Ha Long, Nam Trieu, Ben Kien, Bach Dang, Pha Rung, Saigon Shipyard in order to increase building and repairing capacity. This phase also included setting up a 36 MARINE LOG OCTOBER 2007 www.marinelog.com http://www.algae-x.net http://www.algae-x.net http://www.marinelog.com
