Marine Log - October 2008 - (Page 10) Update GL to class series of mega boxships In a deal that was announced last month in Hamburg at the SMM Exhibition, Germanischer Lloyd (GL) will class a series of seven 13,000 TEU containerships that will be built by Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). The seven mega-boxships are being built for German shipowner MPC Capital AG. Steel will be cut for the first ship in November 2010 at HHI’s yard in Ulsan, Korea. Each ship is expected to take nine months to build, with delivery of the seventh ship in June 2012. As of mid-2008, HHI, the world’s largest shipbuilder, had delivered 85% of its ships at least one month earlier than the contracted delivery date. INLAND • COASTAL • OFFSHORE • DEEPSEA Ulstein launches its largest x-bow ship lstein recently launched its largest offshore vessel to date, named the Viking Poseidon. The 130m x 25m vessel is an ULSTEIN SX 120 type with an X-BOW design. It has accommodations for 105 people and is equipped with a 250 tonnes offshore crane, an ROV garage and a helideck. Viking Poseidon will be delivered to Norway ship-owning company Eidesvik Offshore this coming December. Eidesvik Offshore is known for focusing on environmentally friendly solutions. This is the first vessel the U Donjon cleaning up after Hurricane Ike Donjon Marine Co., Inc. was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to remove and dispose of debris left behind by Hurrican Ike. The debris included vessels, containers, in addition to sections of houses and store fronts. Donjon subcontracted the work to local marine companies who provided workers and equipment. company has ordered from the Ulstein Group, but certainly not the last. Eidesvik, has put in an order for two seismic vessels of the ULSTEIN SX 120 type from Ulstein for delivery in 2010. Eidesvik will charter the vessel to U.S company Veolia ES Special Services (VES) for eight years. VES serves oil and gas and marine construction customers. MEO takes delivery of crewboat Singapore’s Miclyn Express Offshore (MEO) recently took delivery of a 90-passenger crewboat Express 61. The 120 ft boat is the fourth Panamanian-register vessel among MEO’s fleet. Built by the Penguin Shipyard International Pte. Ltd. company, the BV classed crew boat is powered by three 1,350 hp Cummins KTA38 M3 main engines and can travel at speeds of up to 26 knots. It’s auxiliary power includes two Cummins 6BT5.9 DM powered generators. http://www.eagle.org
