The deal includes partnership agreements with CWA’s businesses in Malaysia, China and Hong Kong. The acquisition will broaden Wärtsilä’s ship design competence and capability. CWA is known for its design of offshore vessels, tugs, barges and smaller merchant vessels. All employees will keep their jobs and continue on as Wärtsilä employees. The rigs will be based on PPL’s prorietary design Baker Marine Pacific class 375 mobile offshore drilling unit. The rigs are able to perform in 375 ft of water and drill up to 30,000 ft in high temperature and high pressure wells. The rigs can accommodate up to 120 people. The Egyptian Offshore Drilling Company isn’t the only company getting drilling rigs from PPL Shipyard. PPL also secured a contract worth $229 million from China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation-Sinopec International, making this rig the first newbuild jack up rig to be constructed outside of China.
