Marine Log - October 2008 - (Page 17) FERRIES T his past summer, Washington State Ferries began operating its third car ferry, the Klahowya, with a biodiesel fuel blend as part of the third phase in a Biodiesel Research and Demonstration Project. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from vegetable oils such as soybeans, canola or rapeseed oil, animal fats or cooking greases. One advantage is that it contains no sulfur and reduces toxic pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the exhaust emissions of sulfur oxides and sulfates (major components of acid rain) from biodiesel are essentially eliminated compared to diesel. The exhaust emissions of particulate matter from biodiesel are about 47% lower than overall particulate matter emissions from diesel. The goal of the Biodiesel Research and Demonstration Project, which began back in March, is to identify the sources of biodiesel quality problems and environmental factors that plagued the WSF’s first pilot tests back in 2004 and 2005. During those pilot tests, the use of B20—a blend of 20% biodiesel with 80% ultra low sulfur diesel— resulted in severe clogging in the fuel filters and oil purifiers aboard the vessels and led to the suspension of biodiesel use. FUEL FRESH Washington State Ferries is testing biodiesel in various blends made with canola oil, soybeans, and tallow as part of Biodiesel Research and Demonstration Project. If the tests are successful, as much as 20% of the ferry system’s fuel needs could be met by biodiesel in 2009 www.marinelog.com OCTOBER 2008 MARINE LOG 17 http://www.marinelog.com
