Marine Log - October 2008 - (Page 22) ICE CLASS TANKERS FAST FERRIES FOR THE FAR EAST he demand for high-speed ferries has slowed considerably with the rise in fuel prices, but Asia remains a bright spot. Passenger ferry growth in Asia has translated into some T nice orders for Australia’s Tasmanian shipyards. This past spring, Australia’s Incat Tasmania delivered the second of two 112m aluminumhulled, high-speed catamarans for Japan’s Higashi Nihon Ferry. The Natchan World and its sister, the Natchan Rera, are the largest diesel-powered catamarans. Meanwhile, rival fast ferry The 32m M/V Premium Dream was built for operation in the Ryukyu group of Japanese islands builder Austal delivered the first ferries from its Tasmanian shipyard to Hong Kong-based New World First Ferry (Macau). The two 47.5m high-speed passenger catamarans will enter service this month to meet the growing tourism demand generated from the dramatic increase in Macau’s tourist arrivals since the development of its gaming and megaresort industry. Set to join five similar Austal passenger catamarans already in service in the New World First Ferry (NWFF) fleet, the latest ferries, named New Ferry LXXXVII and New Ferry LXXXVIII will operate at a service speed of 42 knots while carrying 418 passengers.
