The gear boxes will be used in the Advanced Gun System (AGS) Program to assist in the positioning of the 78-ton gun turrets. BAE Systems developed the AGS program and is the primary contractor of the program that is designed for use on the DDG 1000 class of landattack destroyers being used to support the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The AGS is a 155mm gun weapon system that produces sustainable gunfire at a high volume and can hit a target over 70 nautical miles. The gear boxes measure 46 inches long and are 36 inches in diameter. The gear boxes with 3,740 lbs. The peak output torque capacity of the gear box is 26,500 ft. lbs. The system can fire up to 12 rounds per minute with each round’s diameter measuring 6.1 inches. www.excelgear.com TECHNEWS Rolls-Royce introduces S3 series of waterjets Rolls-Royce introduced a new series of more compact, lighter waterjets, the Kamewa S3 range. The S3 unit is smaller than its predecessor, the SII, and weighs 25% less but it gives the same performance. The unit’s smaller size leads to its reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It features an improved bearing design providing for ideal running conditions for the shaft seal and maintains a high pump efficiency over a long period of time by providing close control of the clearance between the impeller and the pump housing. The impeller’s cavitation margin has also been improved by using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The waterjets come in sizes ranging from 50cm pump diameters to 2m pump diameters. The power range also varies, for the smallest unit, the S3-50 the power ranger is 2,000kW and the largest unit, the S3-200 has a power ranger of 40,000 kW. The first vessel to be fitted with the Kamewa S3 waterjets will be the 56m long fast yacht, the Leopard 56, from the Rodriguez Group. www.rolls-royce.com www.marinelog.com OCTOBER 2008 MARINE LOG 41 http://www.excelgear.com http://www.rolls-royce.com http://www.deltatsystems.com http://www.marinelog.com
