Marine Log - October 2008 - (Page 42) Technews Stratos Global completes trial with RNLN Stratos Global Corporation has completed a FleetBroadband trial with the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN). The RNLN is the first organization to commercially deploy the FleetBroadband service. The trial was conducted over a period of three months on board the RNLN Van Kinsbergen in Western European waters. The trial successfully tested emailing through Amos Connect, in addition to testing web browsing, instant messaging, video chat, digital faxing via e-fax and weather forecasting via MeteoConsult’s SPOS. www.stratosglobal.com Wärtsilä in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Ltd., has developed two new lowspeed engines with a power range varying from 3,500 to 9,000 kW. Each of the engines is available either as a Wärtsilä RT-flex electronically controlled common-rail engine or a Wärtsilä RTA mechanically controlled engine. MHI will base its UEC-LSE series engines on the RTA design. The engines will be compliant with IMO Tier II emissions regulations. The Wärtsilä RT-flex35, Wärtsilä RTA35 and Mitsubishi UEC35LSE engine types have a maximum continuous power of 870 kW/cylinder at 167 rev/min. The Wärtsilä RT-flex40, Wärtsilä RTA40 and Mitsubishi UEC40LSE have a maximum continuous power of 1,135 kW/cylinder at 146 TECHNEWS New Wärtsilä & MHI slow speed engines rev/min. The first RT-flex type, is planned to be delivered in the first quarter 2011.
